Our story
The village didn’t disappear.Someone has to gather it again.
Maternal Underground began the way most good things do — with one woman admitting out loud that she was lonely, and another saying: me too.
The founder
Meet Constance Baker
Constance isn’t a therapist, a physician, or a self-proclaimed guru, and she’ll be the first to tell you that.
She is something she believes the world needs more of: a mother who creates space for other mothers to be seen, supported, and reminded that they were never meant to do this alone.
As the mother of three boys, each welcomed into the world through home birth, Constance’s love for birth, motherhood, womanhood, and the quiet strength of the feminine has shaped every part of her life. She believes birth is more than a medical event, motherhood is more than a role, and femininity is something to be honored rather than hurried through.
Like so many women, she searched for the village everyone talks about, the place where mothers gather without judgment, where wisdom is shared freely, children are celebrated, tears are welcome, and no woman has to carry the weight of motherhood alone. When she couldn’t find that village, she decided to build it.
Maternal Underground was born from that dream.
Constance’s gift isn’t having all the answers. It’s bringing the right people together. She believes healing often begins with being truly heard, that meaningful conversations can happen around a campfire just as easily as in a classroom, and that every mother deserves a place where she can exhale.
She is passionate about creating spaces where women reconnect with nature, with one another, and with themselves. Whether it’s a walk beneath towering pines, a shared meal, a circle of honest conversation, or a weekend retreat in the mountains, her hope is that every woman leaves feeling stronger, softer, and more like herself than when she arrived.
When specialized knowledge is needed, Constance believes in surrounding mothers with the very best. Therapists, midwives, doulas, lactation consultants, nutritionists, educators, herbalists, yoga instructors, and other trusted professionals all have a place within the community she is building. Her role is not to replace experts, but to create a home where their wisdom can reach the women who need it most.
At her core, Constance believes motherhood should never be lived in isolation. Women have always gathered around kitchens, campfires, gardens, rivers, and birth beds to raise one another alongside their children. Maternal Underground is her way of bringing that timeless tradition back, one gathering, one conversation, and one mother at a time.
Her vision is beautifully simple: to build the village every mother deserves, beginning in Arizona and, one day, extending far beyond it.
